History of Senior Citizens Day The history of the World Senior Citizen’s Day dates back to 1988. It was officially founded by the former President of the United States of America, Ronald Reagan. He had signed on August 19, 1988, the promulgation of 5847, which appeared on 21 August as National Day of the Third Age. Ronald Reagan was the first to announce the first National Day of the Third Age. ~”For all that, they have achieved throughout their lives and for all that they continue to do, we owe our gratitude and sincere greetings to our senior citizens. We can show our gratitude and appreciation better by making sure our communities are good places. Age and maturity, places where older people can participate as much as possible and find the encouragement, acceptance, support, and services they need to continue living a life of independence and dignity.”~ —Ronald Reagan said, in his Presidential Proclamation. |
Purpose of the Day The main purpose of the World Senior Citizen’s Day is to raise awareness of the condition of older people and to support them throughout the aging process. The day is also recognized for the well-being of the elderly to recognize and appreciate their accomplishments and their participation in society in order to promote through their skills and knowledge. The reason to celebrate this day is to thank the elders for everything they have done for their children and to acknowledge them. They sacrifice their entire lives to nurture their relationships. Such a selfless service that his whole life has received from his family deserves something important. That’s why World Senior Citizens’ Day is celebrated. When they dedicate a special day of the year to the elderly, they give their families the opportunity to see their love and commitment. World Senior Citizens’ Day is an important moment to remind the government of its commitment to work towards goals, to help seniors and, among other things, to end hunger and poverty for the elderly and people of all ages. ![]() |
What Do People Do? Various events and activities are organized on Senior Citizens Day to raise awareness of supporting older people and recognizing their achievements. Some people raise awareness through social media and news stories, while others organize special community gatherings inviting senior citizens, their families, friends, and volunteers. Some businesses give special discounts or deals to senior citizens on or around August 21. The Importance of Staying Connected with Senior Loved Ones According to the Administration on Aging, 28% of adults over 65 live alone; for women over age 75, the percentage jumps to 45%. While maintaining independence can provide a big boost to self-esteem and empowerment, it also comes with risks for our older loved ones. When seniors live alone, without many families or social contact, it can take longer to detect the warning signs of physical or cognitive impairment. This can put their health and safety at risk, and increase the likelihood of depression and other mental health issues.Indeed, loneliness and social isolation are significant predictors not only of physical health problems but also depression and even mortality in the elderly. Conversely, even a quick friendly conversation with a stranger can increase our happiness for the day, says a recent study by the University of British Columbia.Imagine the value of spending true quality time with our loved ones! It’s not only good for seniors, it’s good for families — another study, this one at Boston College, found that grandparents and grandchildren with strong relationships experienced fewer symptoms of depression in both generations. Needless to say, grandchildren also benefit from having another source of advice, connection, and family history. ![]() ![]() Senior Citizen Day Activities There are many ways that you can celebrate National Senior Citizen Day and honor the seniors in your family and your community.
